Moving Up: Coaching and Training for Climbing

To get feedback from a professional athlete like Thomo, is worth the time and money. The look of a professional on how you climb is often far more accurate than ours, because of their experience and knowledge. She gave me excellent tips, on my climbing and on my training methods. She also helped me understand that you don’t need to train long session; you need to train efficiently and methodologically"         Genevieve, Montreal

Testimonials

"Thomasina's coaching and methodology has taken my climbing to the next level and given me the tools to reach my personal goals.  More than halfway through a 12-week program, tailored to my strengths and weaknesses, adjustments to how I climb have already become second nature:

Over the past decade that I've spent climbing, I have always hesitated before acting, not so much as a reflection of doubt, but as a deep desire for success.  Thomasina's drills and specific elements to her training program chosen for me have helped me be efficient and strengthened my resolve, removing so many of the "pauses" in my movement over rock.

Also and I’m sure I’m not alone in this, I've been pretty wary of dynamic movements. Coupled by a disc injury a few years ago that left me relatively immobile for a time, moving statically has become even more ingrained, but on some climbs being 4'-11" tall (and I'm rounding up), it's imperative if not critical to be able to move further with less actual physical height and reach.  The practice and familiarity with dynamic movements built into my program has challenged me to be more fluid and given me tools that translate to a stronger mind making me a more dynamic, confident climber and expanding my range and reach!

To anyone that really wants to make radical and effective long-term improvements in their climbing, work with Thomasina.  Her insight and skill is built on a breadth of experience that serve as the foundation of uniquely beneficial and valuable coaching. My projects are calling to me and I'm ready thanks to Thomo. Thank you, thank you, thank you - you are an inspiration to me.

The Thomasina Training Experience.  So far. An unsolicited testimonial. My experience with Thomasina is Rave-Worthy! I am benefitting greatly from Thomasina’s tremendous abilities to assess, design, and uniquely support progress toward specific goals I have with bouldering, trad, and sport climbing. I am a recreational (read not very good) climber with impressive inflexibility.

Thomasina’s belief, passion, and creative efforts toward helping me enjoy the process and achievements has been astounding and invaluable.  Given my modest climbing prowess, Thomasina’s ability to genuinely appreciate my efforts and celebrate my gains has been a welcome, powerfully helpful surprise !! I am learning so much more and having so much more fun than I imagined!

I am 8 weeks into a customized 12- week training program with Thomasina. 5 weeks after my initial assessment, the attached weight I could hold for my 4 finger hangs jumped  42%.  Weight I could hold onto from a pinch position increased 28%.  Training works!

I am climbing trad, sport, and bouldering better and stronger than I ever have.  I am enjoying and understanding my training!!  I am appreciating an increasing repertoire of movements on the rock along with experiencing greater patience, relaxation, and joy.  Really.

Thank you Thomasina. And Cedar too, for reminding me how to play!!!

“Back in April of this year, I was lucky enough to be able to get a training session with Thomasina at Bloc Shop in Montréal…. Lucky or brave enough to be analyzed by Thomasina hahaha! Often, to get feedback from a professional athlete like Thomo, is worth the time and money. The look of a professional on how you climb is often far more accurate than ours, because of their experience and knowledge.

The way we went with the session was simple: I was climbing and she was analyzing my posture, my feet, my fluidity, my reading methods, my commitment to certain tricky moves, and so on and so on. Thomo helped me realize that the main reason I was not improving was a lack of confidence and commitment. I guess fear is a pretty strong feeling; it can make you NOT do a lot. So we went on for about 90 minutes and she gave me excellent tips, on my climbing and on my training methods. The best thing she said to me was: “Try Everything¨. You don’t know if you can do something or not unless you try it”. Silly? No… Simple, absolutely!

She also helped me understand that you don’t need to train long session; you need to train efficiently and methodologically (pyramid work out, time in the week to work only on your weaknesses etc.…). Overall the training was great and helped me improve. Now I am just waiting for Thomo to come back in Montreal in early 2016 so I can train with her on my postnatal baby get back in shape mode!!! Thomo? Coming back right? …”
